On Wednesday morning, YMCA Northumberland awarded local residents who reflect the peace-building work that happens all year round both inside and outside of the YMCA.

In its 31 years, the YMCA Peace Medal Breakfast has awarded medals to 43 adults and groups, and 19 youth for their efforts to change our community and our world without any special means or resources, demonstrating the values of PEACE.

This year’s award winners included: Lauren Zweerink (Youth Peace Medal) presented by Sarah Yoo from BDO Canada LLP, Shirley O’Neil (Adult Peace Medal) presented by Jessica Fraser-Thomas, YMCA Board Member, and the Della Casa Family (Group Peace Medal) presented by Arlene Howells, YMCA Global Initiatives Committee Member.

“Over the past 31 years, YMCA Northumberland has recognized individuals and groups in Northumberland County who strive every day to make a difference through their acts of PEACE,” says Eunice Kirkpatrick, Chief Executive Officer of YMCA Northumberland.

“This year’s recipients show how any one of us can improve the quality of life in our local, national or global community; inspiring hope and motivating others to act,” added Kirkpatrick.

The celebration of Peace continues on Saturday, September 21st with International Day of Peace and November 16th to 23rd with YMCA Peace Week. Please visit ymcanrt.org for more information on the Peace Week events.
