At approximately 08:45 this morning the Cobourg Police Service were dispatched to St. Mary’s Catholic Secondary School in relation to threats made in relation to a firearm. The threats were made over a social media platform.
While the individual making the threats was not present, a lockdown of the school was initiated for approximately an hour to ensure student, teacher and public safety.
Investigation resulted in determining that the individual in question was residing outside of Cobourg. Officers from the Ontario Provincial Police were notified, and currently have the individualsafely detained for further investigation.
In a statement to parents and students Principal Rob Majdell emphasized his priority for safety and wellbeing after today’s incident.
“I’m proud of the actions our staff took today to ensure the safe environment of students at the school and how our students and parent community responded to this issue today,” said Majdell. “Additional social workers are available for students who require support and parents are asked to contact the school if they have any concerns.”
The Cobourg Police Service is satisfied that there is no further threat to public safety at this time and will provide further information as it is available.
