Cobourg’s Legion Minor Softball Organization is set to host the U16 Fast Pitch National Championships from August 9th through till the 13th at Legion Fields in Cobourg. Eight teams will be competing in the competition, four teams from Ontario including Cobourg, one from Newfoundland, two from Saskatchewan and one from Manitoba.

“It is the first national fast pitch championship this town has hosted for a very long time. We are excited to welcome teams from all over Canada to a very proud softball community,” said Brenda Grundy, Tournament Chair.

Team arrivals begin August 8th. This will be a welcoming day, with coaches’ and managers’ meetings, plus a welcome banquet sponsored by the Cobourg Lions Club. The banquet will include a meet and greet with Josh Maguire, Team Ontario’s captain 2017; Jennifer Dalgarno-Ashley, 2017 Women’s Master’s gold medallist; Ewart “Mr. Softball” Timlin, a 2014 inductee to the Masters Fastball Hall of Fame; and Rob Snoek, national Paralympic athlete. The banquet is $15 and reservations are required.

Celebrating 60 years this season as a sporting organization, the Legion Minor Softball Organization is Cobourg’s longest running sports program.

“The organization has a long-standing relationship and history within this community and we are glad to show it off,” said Heather Grundy, chair of CLMSO.

The Cobourg Dodgers are excited about the competition and want to welcome the community out to watch great softball action.

“It’s been really hard to wait. I’ve never had the chance to play in a national championship and our team now hosting, we really have the opportunity to prove ourselves,” said Graeme Whitehead, U16 Dodger.

Brenda Whitehead said that the committee has been working tirelessly to make this happen, and the community has come forward with some wonderful sponsorships.

“We are inviting everyone from the community to come out and enjoy this tournament. It doesn’t matter if you know the game or not, there will be a high level of softball competition.”

Tournament tickets are $40 for the entire event, $24 for a weekend pass or $10 to $12 for day passes.
